Smartphone HAZMAT App’s

Having instant access to hazardous material resources is not only invaluable, but necessary. Download these free apps to your smartphone. I’ve used mine just out of curiosity when seeing a unusual looking tanker with a placard number I had never seen before. Easy to use, and did I mention free?

As always, the ubiquitous DOT ERG guide that you all should be familiar with.

Another, more extensive resource is WISER. WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) is a mobile application designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents. It’s also free.

The WISER app has extensive capabilities! Of note is the ability to set User Profiles that enable users to specify the role they are currently playing at the scene of an incident: first responder, HAZMAT specialist, EMS specialist, hospital provider, or preparedness planner. The key information presented to the user about a substance varies depending on this role, so that the information most relevant to the respective job can be quickly accessed.

Download these and try them out to familiarize yourself with them before needing them. Do you have any others? Feel free to comment!
